Presentation: Measuring the Narrative impact of the Tsha-Tsha

Measuring the Narrative impact of the Tsha-Tsha television serial on HIV prevention behaviours in South Africa: Why Theory and Art Both Matter

Doug Storey, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health/Center for Communication Programs, USA

The Tsha-Tsha television serial has captured the imaginantions of young South Africans and guided them through changes in behaviour that have reduced HIV transmission on a national scale.

The best EE narratives engage audience members by presenting then with characters and storylines that evoke the personal experience and emotions of the viewer. The most compelling stories walk the line between two plausible outcomes, what the audience hopes will happen and what it fears might happen. This emotional response helps the audience experience what the protagonist experiences and when a character undergoes a change, the viewer vicariously experiences that as well.
This presentation describes how theory-based formative research was used to develop compelling characters and storylines that audiences would relate to and how the story achieved the outcomes predicted by the theories, specifically through viewer identification with and empathy toward particular characters, resulting in the crossover of fiction into reality.
