CHALLENGE OF THE BALANCE: August 2012

This interdisciplinary certificate course offers an in-depth orientation to the politics, policies and practices of pressing environment and development concerns, from a developing country perspective. Select participants will be offered the Anil Agarwal Fellowship.

Course modules for these summer courses include:

• Environmental governance in India
• Poverty and the biomass economy
• Ecological 'rights' and state of natural resource management (land, water & forests)
• Conservation regimes & the human-wildlife conflicts
• Urban growth challenges
• Sustainable industrialization and pollution control

• Global environmental governance (focus on climate change politics)

*Faculty *includes eminent academics, leading environmental activists and policy makers in addition to CSE research and programme staff.

*Group course assignment *includes hands-on research and reportage to produce a web documentary or a print magazine. Participants get first-hand experience of working with the professional design and editorial team of Down to Earth magazine.

A *week-long field visit outside Delhi *where participants experience rural community-led eco-restoration efforts. Previous batches have visited the Sunderbans, the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve in the Himalayas, the cold desert areas of Spiti, and the tribal belt of Rajasthan, the lake city of Udaipur.
