Youth Music Festival: Powerful Lyrics Hit Popular Music

Moreira Chonguica, Musician and Ethnomusicologist, Mozambique

MoreStar is hosting a Youth Music Festival supported and endorsed by well-known musician Moreira Chonguica to reinforce HIV prevention values and attitudes in Mozambique. This presentation will outline the unique ways of engaging young people through a contest for students to submit inspiring lyrics. The top 10 will be performed at the festival by the best emerging young bands. It will culminate with media coverage and the release of a CD produces by Moeira Chonguica containing the winning tracks. This concept empowers youth through music to embrace positive attitudes, overcome risks associated with HIV and live healthy in the context of HIV/AIDS.

Rock Point 256: Modelling and Behavior Change

Rock POint 256 is a radio serial drama broadcast in Uganda that models gender-equitable and non-violent sexual relationships, community action to support healthier practices among young people and the process of individual behaviour change over yime among key characters similar to the drama's audience. The drama does not tell the audience what to think or do. It simply tells the stories of people and communities as they change. This session addresses the question of whether such non-prescriptive drama can influence behaviour and how drama based on behaviour change stories can capture an audience.
