Umar Weswala is an upcoming journalist who has been working in the media since 2008 on peace, community and human rights-related issues. He is has acquired special training in peace journalism, social media and electoral journalism. Umar began his media career with Radio Bilal in 2008 as a presenter of a one hour weekly program called ‘Peace at Glance’ and later (in the same year) joined The Torch Publications, one of Kampala’s leading weekly news papers as a sub editor. He has since assumed the position of Managing Editor. Umar’s factual, objective and analytical reporting earned him a slot on the US Mission Kampala’s Press Corps team. He has since reported widely and factually about the US government and some of his articles can be read on his blog http://umaruganda.blogspot.com In recognition of his media works, he was part of the media delegation that met a top US general and commander of US AFRICOM Gen. Carter F. Ham – July 2011on approval by the US Mission in Uganda. He also took part in the Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists 2011 thereby becoming an Edward R. Murrow fellow. He is currently the interim chairman of the USA Press Corps – Uganda. Using the knowledge acquired from the social media trainings organised by the US Mission, Umar started two face book groups – US Press Corps – Uganda and IVLP Africa 2011. The latter comprises of African journalists from English speaking Africa who took part in the Edward R. Murrow Program for journalists in 2011. He is currently preparing to start an online publication which will be launched in January 2013.
