Managing your account - Pictures!

To: Participants - Proposed Communication for Development Association From: Warren

Hi and thanks to everyone for registering on and engaging through the online platform at http://networks.comminit.com/c4dassociation/

As we move this process forward this will really help with ensuring open communication; organised according to the priorities we agree; in one place where everyone can access, review and contribute; and, associated to information about the people participating and the ability to interact with them.

Just a few quick tips for things that you can do to enhance your experience of and presence on the platform, and your control over it!

  1. When logged in at http://networks.comminit.com/c4dassociation/ I suggest you click on your USERNAME top left. In general this how you access the functionality to manage your account.
  2. From there click on ACCOUNT SETTINGS and you will see all sorts of tabs where you can do all sorts of things, such as
  3. Upload a PICTURE to associate with your posts and profile (if you have not done so already)
  4. Change your PASSWORD if you wish
  5. Edit your PROFILE
  6. Edit the PERSONAL and PROFESSIONAL INFORMATION tabs - others can review this information to learn more about your work.

OK - just a few tips - please do explore tabs and links. Lots of stuff you can do! Find for example how to contact someone in this network individually without having their email address revealed! Please let me know if there are any issues.

And please note that you can reply by email to all posts (thanks to those who have done so already).

Best wishes - Warren

Engaging through the online platform

To: Participants in the group considering a Global Communication for Development Association From: Warren

Hi folks - thanks for joining this platform - much appreciated. There were two main activities identified for the Association and we set up topics and threads related to these.

Please note that Jo has raised an issue concerning Research on C4D - you can review and add your comments here http://networks.comminit.com/c4dassociation/node/10101

There were two main activities identified for the Association and we set up topics and threads related to these.

If you wish to comment/share ideas on the proposed Peer Review Journal please go here http://networks.comminit.com/c4dassociation/node/9994 You will see one topic already within which there are comments by Jo and Ketan. You can open and reply to these at http://networks.comminit.com/c4dassociation/node/9996 Or please feel free to start a different topic on this overall theme At either link above click Add Topic (right top) and then choose Peer Reviewed Journal as the theme. This will allow us to keep organised threads.

You can do the same within the Face-To-Face meeting theme at http://networks.comminit.com/c4dassociation/node/9995 - share your ideas on the present topic at that link or create a new topic on the annual face-to-face meeting theme. http://networks.comminit.com/c4dassociation/node/10101

Whilst on the platform at http://networks.comminit.com/c4dassociation/dashboard please do click on your username top left, then Account Settings and then click Picture and add an image that you want to associate with your profile and postings. Thanks to Jo http://networks.comminit.com/user/23933 and Paula http://networks.comminit.com/user/375 for doing this.

More soon - including the invite to the New York Meeting on Aug 30 and 31 - see Calendar at http://networks.comminit.com/c4dassociation/calendar

Developing the communication platform

As part of the partnership between The CI and UNICEF re support to you all for the consideration and possible development of a global, membership based C4D Association, The CI will develop and support the online processes. In the initial phases this will be for the consideration of this idea - then if we all decide to go ahead we can transform this into the platform for the Assoc itself. What you see here is just one small, initial part of that process. You can:

  • Contribute overall thoughts - Click Create Content/General Forum entry
  • Comment on particular themes - eg as a beginning I started themes on "Mission of the C4D; Peer Reviewed Journal; and "Face-to-Face meetings" - the three main themes of the teleconf and concept paper. Communicating this way means that we can have distinct threads on particular issues - Click Create Content/New Topic and select the relevant theme
  • Contribute any relevant events - Click Create Content/New Event
  • Reply to other people's comments - again so that we have threads
  • The concept note is included in way that supports your comments and additional notes

... and much else. Will brief everyone soon in more detail. But it is good to just explore.

Please note that you can (and please do) enhance your profile.Click your name top left, then Account Settings and you will see options for picture, profile, etc.

Plus all of this is email enabled - you can reply by email.

Thanks - just the very beginnings - best wishes - Warren

Media Development: Implications of the Leveson Inquiry

To: The Drum Beat Network on Media Development

From: Warren Feek

Hi - I am wondering how you are reacting to The Leveson Inquiry into the Culture, Practices and Ethics of the British press? It has revealed tales of proven and alleged illegal phone hacking by journalists, police working for newspapers, overly cozy media-politician relationships, deliberately false media stories being published, perhaps "favouritism" in deals related to the sale of media companies, file boxes required for evidence going missing and a bunch of other accusations, along with some convictions, mainly of journalists. See for example this BBC summary of week 17 of the Inquiry or this chronology of the hacking "scandal" as outlined by the BBC.

One of my reactions - once I get over the aghast phase - is to position this rather horrendous insight into how some of the most powerful and prominent media have operated, alongside how Northern media have perceived, treated and worked in relation to media in the South over the past 20 plus years - work that has often been supported by large levels of Development agency funding.
