Response to Fackson's posting UNESCO outlines empirical, governance and normative case for media in post-2015 discussions

I was just reviewing the attachments to Fackson's post. In particular the 15 March Discussion brief on Free independent media in the post- 2015 development agenda

That discussion brief has these core arguments as the combined heart and spine of their submission: Do you agree?

  1. The evolving empirical correlation between free, pluralistic and independent media and national development monitoring and priority setting.
  2. The past and emerging recognition of unfettered media as an integral part of governance that is a prerequisite for sustainable development.
  3. The broad global consensus on the normative functions of a free, independent and pluralistic media system in relation to the normative discourse of sustainable development

So, what is your response to that framing for media development? Can we prove the empirical correlation? Is sustainable development impossible without a free, independent and pluralistic media? (How do you understand free media?)

One personal comment. After years of debate on this, including with some UNESCO staff, it was great to see media presented within a Development rubric.

OK - your analysis, reactions, ideas on the 15 March Discussion brief Free independent media in the post- 2015 development agenda
