Addressing issues of Stigma and Discrimination for effective HIV/AIDS action

To: The HIV/AIDS Community within The Drum Beat network

Hi - trust that all is well. Stigma and discrimination remain massive obstacles to even more effective HIV/AIDS action. Below are three examples of communication approaches to addressing stigma and discrimination in the HIV/AIDS context. Can we please encourage you to share your insights and analysis of preferred ways to reduce and remove stigma and discrimination in your context.

Storytelling to Combat HIV/AIDS Stigma amongst Transport Workers
"...involved Kenyan transport workers, AIDS clinicians, and union members listening to and telling stories about HIV and its impact on their lives..."

Evaluation: Is This Justice? Multi-Media Campaign to Reduce Stigma Against Women Living with HIV/AIDS
"...details formative, baseline, and endline research conducted to assess the effectiveness of a multimedia campaign designed to bring attention to the stigma and violence faced by women living with HIV/AIDS (WLHA) in India..."

Campanha Igual a Você - Criancas Vivendo com HIV - Just Like You Campaign: Children Living with HIV
"...includes ten 30-second spots in which different groups of people confront stigma - gays, lesbians, transsexuals/transvestites, sex workers, drug users, people living with AIDS, refugees, children living with HIV, and students in general - and express their desire to be respected by others…"

There are more insights at this link where you can also filter further according to your specific interests.

Please do share your insights re effective ways forward for digital media developments relative to your goals and strategy.

Many thanks - Warren

Updating this a little below

Updating this a little below are some recent and I think useful resources:

Access to Justice: Evaluating Law, Health and Human Rights Programmes in Kenya

Legal integration programmes, defined here as programmes incorporating legal aid, training, and representation into existing health services to improve health outcomes and advance human rights, have the potential to promote accountability, reduce stigma and discrimination, and contribute to altering unjust structures and systems. This strategic observation motivated an evaluation carried out to collect evidence about the impact of legal empowerment programmes. http://www.comminit.com/hiv-aids/content/access-justice-evaluating-law-health-and-human-rights-programmes-kenya

Lost in Transitions: Current Issues Faced by Adolescents Living with HIV in Asia Pacific

The Lost in Transitions report captures the experiences of adolescents aged 10-19 who were perinatally infected with HIV and those who acquired HIV through unprotected sex and drug use. It seeks to offer insights into some of the unique issues adolescents living with HIV face, such as pervasive stigma and discrimination. http://www.comminit.com/hiv-aids/content/lost-transitions-current-issues-faced-adolescents-living-hiv-asia-pacific

Thanks for the resource

Thanks for the resource focused on transport workers. Much that I find online is limited to fixed site situations, whereas the spread of HIV is in evidence along many migrant corridors.

These situational reviews might be useful - the first two have strong HIV preventing components and the third addresses structural issues:
