Amie Joof is journalist, activist, and the Executive Director of FAMEDEV- the Inter-African Network for Women, Media, Gender and Development. Amie Joof is currently Coordinator/editor of ‘An Alternative Voice for Gambians’, an online radio in support of political and socio economic development, freedom of expression and human rights in The Gambia. This is part of the ongoing campaign for the defense and promotion of freedom of expression and press freedom in The Gambia. She is actively engaged in training, research and advocacy on issues of press freedom, freedom of expression, human rights, gender and media, HIV and AIDS and development.

She has more than 35 years work experience in the media, communication, women, gender and children’s rights issues, press freedom and freedom of expression at National, Sub Regional, Regional and International levels. She has occupied both managerial and governance positions in different media and development organisations both public and Non Governmental.

She spearheaded the establishment of women and adult education radio programming, radio listening groups, women’s community radio stations and the training and use of traditional media namely theatre and musical groups for development programming at Radio Gambia now part of Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS).

She has served as Trainer and Regional coordinator for West and Central Africa for the Global Media Monitoring Project, GMMP, one of the largest research and advocacy initiative in the world aimed at fair and balanced gender representation in and through the media in 2005 and 2009 for the World Association for Christian Communication, WACC.

From 1971 Amie joined Radio Gambia and rose through the ranks in 1998 as acting manager at Gambia Radio and TV Services. From 1989 to 1994, she produced radio dramas on family planning and family health dramas (Pa kube jarra) for Radio Gambia, in partnership with Johns Hopkins University and the Gambia Family Planning Association. She is also a former head of the Rural Broadcasting and Adult Education Section of Radio Gambia.

Amie Joof worked as Secretary General of the West Africa Women’s Association (an ECOWAS institution), Director of the African Women’s Media Center (AWMC) of the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) before moving on to head FAMEDEV.

From 1993 through 1999, Amie Joof was president of GAMCOTRAP, a Gambia non-governmental organisation dealing with harmful traditional practices such as Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting and gender and human rights issues. She is the first woman to become president of the Gambia Family Planning Association (GFPA), and was chairperson of the National Women’s Council of The Gambia from 1993 to 1999.

She also served as Chairperson of the Communication Working Group of the Roll Back Malaria Programme of the WHO, and the Editorial Committee of the Africa Link Newsletter of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, IPPF Africa Region. She was a member of the Executive Board of the International Planned parenthood federation (IPPF) Africa Region.

Amie Joof was Member Of The National Population Commission of The Gambia, General Secretary Of the National Parliamentary- Media Task Force On Child Survival and Development in The Gambia, member of the National AIDS Committee of The Gambia, member of the Independent National Consultative Committee (NCC) charged with the responsibility of reviewing the Timetable and Programme of Rectification of the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC) through consultations with the Gambian People and the Donor Community in The Gambia, Vice Chairperson of the National Think Tank (NATT) of The Gambia that prepared “The Gambia’s VISION 2020”, the Ethical Committee of the Medical Research Council (MRC) as well as the Economic and Social Council in The Gambia. .

She is a member of an expert group of the Communication for Education and Development (COMED) of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) that developed a hands-on toolkit on covering education for journalists and communicators in Africa. Amie Joof is also a member of the Gambia Press Union (GPU) and has served as a gender and media resource person for the International Federation of Journalists, (IFJ) Africa Office, the Eastern Africa Journalists Association (EAJA) and the Southern Africa Journalists Association (SAJA). Amie Joof has done consultancy work for the Washington based International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), Water Aid International in Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Senegal, Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA)/Communication Working Group (COMED), the Centre for African family Studies (CAFS), Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), West Africa Democracy Radio, (WADR), the Japanese International Development Cooperation-JICA, the Inter State Committee For Drought Control In The Sahel (CILLS) FAO-The Food And Agriculture Organisation Article 19, Solidaridad Internacional and the Spanish Women’s Association. has undergone numerous professional training in Corporate Governance, Organisational and Financial Management, Gender Mainstreaming, Participatory Gender Audit, advocacy and social mobilisation just to mention a few. She speaks English, French, Wolof, Mandinka, Fula and Krio. She possesses a strong multicultural background, gained through extensive job related travel and personal interest.

She belongs to several associations and networks such as Solidarity for African Women’s Rights (SOAWR), the African Women’s Communication Network (FEMNET), Network of African Freedom of Expression Organisations (NAFEO), the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) and the Coalition for Human Rights in The Gambia.

She has won several media awards from WHO, URTNA and Japan.
