Steven Livingston is Professor of Media and Public Affairs and Media and International Affairs with joint appointments in the School of Media and Public Affairs and the Elliott School of International Affairs. He holds a PhD in political science from the University of Washington (1990). Livingston joined the GW faculty in 1991. In addition to his teaching and scholarship, he has held a variety of administrative posts at GW, including stints as the director of the School of Media and Public Affairs and director of the Political Communication Program. He is also the founding director of the Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Community (formerly the Institute for Public Diplomacy). His current book project, Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood (Oxford University Press), looks at alternative governance modalities in parts of the world where the state is weak or missing. It considers new forms of technologically enabled collective action in pursuit of public goods where the state is incapable or unwilling to meet these needs. His most recent book, When the Press Fails (University of Chicago Press), looks at media and public opinion dynamics prior to and in the early stages of the Iraq war. He has authored or co-authored scores of referred journal articles and book chapters. His earlier work on global real-time media coverage of war and conflict is the foundational scholarly work in this area. His work on collective action, governance, and information and communication technology has taken him to some thirty countries in the last four years, including multiple trips to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as stays in several African countries, India, Malaysia, and to South and Central America.
