According to the Rory Peck Trust: "Right now, Egypt is one of the most difficult and dangerous countries for journalists to work in. Yet few Egyptian freelancers receive any formal safety or first aid training. Recently, the Trust collaborated on a training initiative for Egyptian photojournalists in Cairo."

The Trust partnered with Al-Liquindoi Workshops, Contemporary Image Collective (CIC) in Cairo, and TYR Solutions on a tailored 3-day HET [Hostile Environment Training] course for Egyptian photojournalists in November 2013, funding the participation of four freelancers.

As stated in the Trust enewsletter:"The course - "Working in Challenging Environments" - was set up in response to a call from Egyptian photojournalists who were looking for formal training that could help navigate and manage the dangers that they faced while reporting daily, including demonstrations and violent clashes.

Over three days, through formal lessons and practical scenarios, the group learned the importance of safety planning and risk assessment, how to operate on the ground, assess dangers, and spot weapons. They also learned about communications safety and digital security, and gained vital first aid skills and knowledge.

Participants said that they came away with a clear understanding of the need for preparation and risk assessment before and during assignments, and that they had acquired crucial skills and knowledge that could completely change the outcome of a future situation.

With Committee to Protect Journalists reporting an unprecedented level of attacks against journalists in Egypt, and widespread detentions, including the charging and imprisonment of journalists working for Al-Jazeera, this training proved timely and necessary."

In your experience, where else might this training be useful to journalists working in volatile situations?
