The National AIDS Control Program has been in place since 2000. HIV/AIDS prevention programs have been introduced throughout the education system for teacher trainees, teachers and schoolchildren, including anti-AIDS clubs and peer-led education approaches. Cher Warren.. AFRIQUE : POUR

Cher Warren..

 MY Thematic Contribution.

MEDIA, HEALTH, EDUCATION AND BEHAVIOUR. /COMMUNICATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT.
RETHINKING THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA.

Media’s ability to interpret public health/development objectives into Media’s objectives and action. To mobilize community to act to live HIV free, the Medias needs to act as advocates for the provision of services, opportunities, and societal support that will facilitate appropriate action among community. Ensuring and facilitating youth access to condoms is but one of these. This requires a rethinking of the media’s role, and developing new strategies to ensure that they may indeed consider adopting such a role. This role was also: - To encourage positives values ; - Integral to social, economic, political development ; - To educate, entertain, inform, empower people ; - To give the community a voice-issue-aired, needs known. Some non- governmental organization and governments consider the media’s first duty to act as health educators persuading the public to change their sexual behavior. Some media professionals, such as health columnists welcome such a role<; Many other believe that the media’s first responsibility is to provide the public with facts about the broader issues relating to the disease and the response to it. In Africa, media have done a remarkable job in reporting HIV and AIDS. They are captured the spread, the threat and the effect. Moving tales of devastation have been written, powerful images of courage and struggle have been caught on television. Radio programmers have educated individual and communities about risky behavior and how to avoid infection. There are still millions of people who have not been fully exposed to information that can help avoid infection or deal with reality of being infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, and, many journalists still do not have the tools, techniques and information needed to effectively report on HIV/AIDS. There is a growing need for journalist and communication professionals with experience of social issues in the health matter, HIV/AIDS, health and development, life sciences. Academics in the field of communication are involved whenever policy makers are collaboratively developing a new program on Health-Communication and Development. This new programme aims to deliver academically equipped communication professionals who are capable of analyzing and facilitating communication on a strategic level. The programme focuses on communication around major societal themes such as health and development. FOUSSENOU SISSOKO. COMMUNICATION-HEALTH AND HIV/AIDS EXPERT.
