The Nature of Media Development

To: The Media Development community within The Drum Beat network From: Warren Feek Re: Perspectives on Media Development from James Deane blog

(Please do reply to the questions posed in this post. Share your perspectives. Simply reply as you would for a normal email. Or click on the Read More link below and post your responses in the Comments block.)

Greetings and best wishes. I previously did a general note re James Deane's blog on the closing of Panos London - see http://www.comminit.com/policy-blogs/content/memoriam-panos-london

Within that blog there were some insights about the nature of media development from the Panos London perspective. Just one quote:

"Panos’ purpose was to support a free and plural media capable of providing the platforms and opportunities for public debate in developing countries; to provide information itself on key development issues and support others to do so; to catalyse public debate on those issues without trying to tell people what to think. In essence, its work was to create an information and communication environment most conducive to people taking control of their own lives." http://www.comminit.com/policy-blogs/content/memoriam-panos-london

Do you agree with this strategic approach to media development?

Do you even regard this approach as media development?

Is an approach such as the one outlined by James above still relevant today?

Is it still required?
