The Role of Media and Communication in Fragile States

Media development in fragile states has gained both recognition - when, for example, journalists succeed in contributing to peaceful and effective elections - and notoriety - when, for example, a formerly public radio frequency falls into the hands of partisan politicians. James Deane's policy briefing "Fragile States: The Role of Media and Communication" http://www.comminit.com/media-development/content/fragile-states-role-media-and-communication begins: "This briefing examines how current media trends are affecting state and societal fragility, both positively and negatively."
For recent reporting on strategies, on impact analysis, and on evaluation from projects working in fragile contexts, see the link below - a collection of summaries and blogs linked to documents by BBC Media Development and other organisations and individuals who are working on media development in difficult circumstances: http://www.comminit.com/fragile-contexts/search/apachesolr_search/media%20development?filters=tid:3083

Re: Funding Opportunity - Patrice L. Engle Dissertation Grant For Global Early Child Development

Hi and best wishes.

The Society for Research in Child Development sends this opportunity:

The Patrice L. Engle Dissertation Grant provides support for students interested in a career in global early child development who are from or doing research in low- or middle-income countries. The Grant includes US$5,000 to support dissertation research and a 2-year student membership to SRCD. The developmental focus of the research should include children, prenatal to 6 years of age living in low- or middle- income countries, as defined by the World Bank. Grantees are encouraged to submit an abstract to the SRCD Biennial meeting following the completion of their research. Grantees from low- or middle-income countries are encouraged to apply to SRCD for international travel funds to attend the SRCD Biennial meeting.

The 2013 Deadline for the Application is April 30th. Applications must be sent via email to Patrice.Engle.Grant@SRCD.ORG. Applicants will be notified of decisions by June 30, 2013. Funds will be disbursed after Grantees have met the commitments outlined above.

Re: Improving the lives of young children - visiting urban slums and remote rural pockets in India

Hi and best wishes.

Today's link is to an Oct 18 blog from Margriet Wolters (Bernard van Leer Foundation) describing her visit to BvLF-funded projects in Odisha, India. She details work on a local level on mother tongue language instruction in early childhood education. Let us hear your thinking on language issues and advantages/disadvantages of mother tongue and multi-lingual education in early childhood. Read hear http://www.comminit.com/clickthru/3322a8e2225d364d6a38f75bf32e8ad7?node= and then reply to this email with comments.

I noted a story of empowerment embedded in the blog, as well, and wondered if it might be connected to the completion of secondary school of the young woman whose action resulted in improved access to water and nutrition for her community.(This UN document http://www.comminit.com/global/content/state-world%E2%80%99s-children-2011-adolescence-age-opportunity theorises that completion of secondary education can result in empowerment and more civic participation.) I’ll try to post more on evidence that strong early childhood education leads to more secondary completion. If you can help with evidence, please reply to this email or send to children@comminit.com

All the best, Julie

Re: Address social roots of gun violence

Hi and best wishes.

I wanted to send you a link on a recent op ed publication by Gary Slutkin and Michael Feigelson (Michael works with CI partnering organisation the Bernard van Leer Foundation - this article appeared in the BvLF Latest News links on Jan 21). It is an editorial in the US newspaper The Baltimore Sun and, in it, the authors recognise the work of Cure Violence, a national NGO that has been working in Baltimore since 2007. As stated in the editorial "... these activities create communities where a 7-year-old boy sees and learns that nonviolence can command respect." http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/oped/bs-ed-guns-baltimore-20130116,0,5704016.story

As always, we at The Communication Initiative hope that this publication informs your work on children's rights and early childhood development. We will be sending a series of emails on Early Childhood Development in the next few weeks - you can comment through replying to this email. Please ask your colleagues to join our forum and ECD network by emailing children@comminit.com

All the best, Julie
