Hi to the D & G network, In

Hi to the D & G network, In case you have not had a chance to familiarise yourself with the D & G networking site http://networks.comminit.com/democracy-governance/ , I just wanted to let you know how you can find out who else is in this network.

We currently have over 200 members and are growing daily. These members include organisations such as Search for Common Ground, IREX, Fesmedia- Africa, Internews, Civicus, West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA), Panos African Regional offices, Open Society Institute Africa Regional offices as well as individual journalists and communication consultants – to mention just a few. If you would like to find out who else is in this network, go to the yellow members icon at the top of the page. This will give you the complete list of members. To find out more about a particular member, just click on their name. If you would like to contact them, you can click on the “Contact” tab next to the “Profile” tab.

If you would like to add information to your profile so that others can find out more about you (and potentially contact you outside of this network), go to the far top left corner of the homepage or dashboard and click on your username. You will see a few options. Click on Profile to see what your profile says. To add information, click on Account Settings. You will see a few options in the top menu bar: click on “Profile” to include your organisation, address (country info might be the most important) and other contact information (click “send” at the bottom to save your information when you are done) ; go to “Personal Information” to include information about your organisation and/or your work; and under “Professional Information” you can enter your title. The last Tab “Picture” allows you to upload a photo for your profile.

The site also offers a great way to keep up to date on the latest D & G information in Africa as it contains a feed with the latest content from the D & G website as well as a D & G newsfeed.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. If you have forgotten your password, you just need to request a new one and if you have forgotten your username contact me at aventh@comminit.com

Hi to the D & G network, Our

Hi to the D & G network,

Our poll on creating a human rights and democracy and governance media network has been very popular and there has been an overwhelmingly positive (89%) response in favour of establishing such a journalist network in Africa. See poll here http://www.comminit.com/governance-africa/content/africa-needs-continental-media-network-journalists-working-issues-related-democracy-gove

What are your thoughts on setting up such a network? Do you know whether this kind of network is something that is (or was) in discussion and do you know of organisations that are looking into this? Also, would you or your organisation/institution be interested in getting involved?

To send a response, just hit reply on this email.
Many thanks, Anja

Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the information. The importance and necessity of such a network cannot be over emphasised. By the way I am not aware of any such network in existence or seeing it in a discussion. And be assured that my organisation is very much interested on it.

Grassroots comics – a

Grassroots comics – a versatile tool for community activists

Grassroots comics, i.e. visual stories made by community activists to support their local campaigning, are powerful and cost-effective. The comics contribute to the local debate, which is essential for furthering democracy and good governance.

In the last decade World Comics Finland (NGO, registered in 1997) has made several initiatives to introduce grassroots comics as a communication tool in Africa (Tanzania, Mozambique, Morocco, Burundi, and Kenya) mainly with support from Finnish Government NGO funding. The experiences have been very encouraging. For more details see our website: www.worldcomics.fi and our newsblog: http://comics-with-attitude.blogspot.com/

The comics are usually made into wallposter comics, made of two photocopies joined together. The posters are put up in places where people gather, like markets, bus stops, community centers, clinics, etc.

The comics are prepared in workshops by participating community activists. The issues at hand and the target groups are discussed thoroughly. The process of creating the comics helps the participants to articulate their points of views into a short and compact visual story.

The themes chosen for the comics are determined by the local activists and cover issues such as land use, drug abuse, alcoholism, corruption, community action, access to education, domestic violence, etc.

Grassroots comics is an inexpensive communication medium for people who have little or no access to media. When the poster is put up in a central place the message will be read by many. People in the local communities are much more interested in what their neighbours have to say rather than reading a message on a slick poster from the capital or from abroad.

Comics used as a communication tool are attractive, attention-grabbing and immediate. Comics made by local activists are culturally correct and take up locally relevant issues. With comics one can utilize both images and texts. With comics one can show rather than explain. Because comics are drawn by hand, they always retain a human quality - it is a non-aggressive medium.

Grassroots comics contribute to the local debate, which is a cornerstone for supporting democracy and good governance.

Check some samples of grassroots comics on the link http://www.worldcomics.fi/articles/comic-samples

We are frequently asked if it is possible to make comics if you can’t draw well. The answer is yes, in comics the story, its drama, its message and its relevance to the community is what matters. We have over the years developed a set of instructions and excercises which guides the activists through the process of making grassroots comics. It is possible to learn the method in a few days. Hands-on manuals are available in English, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Swahili, Somali, Kirundi, Hindi, Urdu and Finnish on our website, on the link ”Free downloadable material”.

World Comics Finland also runs ToT workshops for training of grassroots comics trainers, who can later hold their on workshops.

To make grassroots comics is definitively a bottom-up approach, which engages both activists and community members in a debate on matters important to them.

Inexpensive, creative and low-tech!

Try it!

Hi to the Soul Beat Africa D

Hi to the Soul Beat Africa D & G network,

As mentioned before, we are planning to launch a discussion on developing a democracy, governance, and human rights journalism network in Africa. Does Africa need such a network? And if so, how would it function and what purpose would it have?

We are hoping that the discussion can be used by organisations, who would like to be involved in creating such a network, to advocate for such a network and to possibly even develop a proposal to obtain funding for such an initiative.

If you think any of your colleagues and other people in your networks would be interested in participating, please let them know about it (you can forward this email to them.) If they are not already a member of the D & G network (or any other CI/Soul Beat Africa network), they can join by registering here http://networks.comminit.com/user/register (select Join Soul Beat Africa: Democracy and Governance Network.)

Also, if you know of any organisations/media institutions who are looking into establishing a democracy, governance, and human rights journalism network in Africa, please let us know. You can reply to this email OR comment online by following the read more link below.

Many thanks, Anja

To: Soul Beat Africa Democracy and Governance Network From: D.M. Keinneetse Re: The role of media in improving transparency and accountability in Africa.

I am thrilled by this conversation. My only question is why Botswana has not made it to the list of countries that are benefitting from the program. I know there is a general perception about how well entrenched democracy is in Botswana. But the curious thing to ask is why does the government still own 'the word'? Why don't we have community radio stations that have become common place in Southern Africa? Because that might even explain why in the name of democracy the country has not changed government in half a century.

The issue is that our kind of democracy was the creation of the British. No wonder the British are not in a hurry to see it changed.

What then is the material difference between what obtains here and that which has obtained in say Cuba for about the same number of years? Should we then not conclude that programs like these are not meant to help people to reclaim their dignity against powerful governments but rather to continue the cold war by the air waves?

When a government grows so dispropotionately powerful against its own citizens, is that not how dictatorships are built?

Hi to the D & G network, Please participate in our survey! Thank you to everyone who has already filled in our democracy and governance knowledge management survey. If you have not yet completed the survey, this is just a little reminder to please participate. Your input is very valuable to the work that we do.

Just to recap, the survey aims to access the Soul Beat Africa D & G knowledge management initiative, which includes the D & G website http://www.comminit.com/governance-africa/ , D & G e-newsletters, and our online networking platform.
Basically, it seeks to answer the following questions: * Are we providing you with knowledge that is useful to your work? * Are we doing a good job in sharing your knowledge and information more widely? * Are we enabling more networking amongst organisations?
* And overall, is the knowledge sharing and networking having an impact on the work you are doing on the ground?

The survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. To access the survey, go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/dandg-survey

Your time and effort are very much appreciated! Please note that we will close the survey on Friday, March 15 2013.
